James & Elizabeth Ramm
of Cley-next-the-sea

James Ramm, the son of Luke and Mary Ramm was baptised 30th August 1784. At the age of 20 he entered service with the HMS Hydra on 1st March 1808 and is known to have been still serving on her in 1810. A note in the muster book says he allocated his monthly pay to his mother.

Elizabeth Bear was born around 1789.

James Ramm, a mariner, married Elizabeth Bear in Cley-next-the-sea on 17th October 1815. They had five children baptised in Cley:

In 1841 James and Elizabeth were shown with their two daughters, Mary and Fanny, and James' occupation was given as Sailor. In 1851 James was living on his own in Quay Street, Cley, and was shown as a coal porter.

Elizabeth was buried in Cley on 22nd February 1848 and James on 27th January 1860.

Of their children:

  • Maria married William Brett, a carpenter, in Cley on 27th November 1838 and they are known to have had eight children.
  • Mary married James Hurn, a shoemaker, in Cley on 28th November 1848.
  • Frances married William Benjamin Bishop, a mariner, in Cley on 28th May 1844 where they brought up six children.
