John & Ann Allison of Hindringham

John Allison, a son of John and Elizabeth, was born around 1766 but his baptism has not been found.

Ann Lake, a daughter of William and Tabitha, was baptised in Great Snoring on 31st July 1763.

A marriage bond dated 5th March 1785 states that John Allison, aged 18 and a yeoman of North Barningham, and Ann Lake, aged 21, were to be married and that John’s father, John Allison senior, gave his consent as the younger John was still a minor. John and Ann were married in Hindringham on the following day, by licence.

In 1841 John and Ann were still living in Hindringham and John was recorded as an agricultural labourer.

John and Ann were both buried in Hindringham, Ann on 22nd March 1848 and John on 26th September 1849, by which time they were both in their mid-eighties.

Of their children:

  • William married Mary Lee in Hindringham on 16th July 1811.

  • Elizabeth married Robert Rowe, a farm labourer, in Hindringham on 21st May 1816 and they lived in Bale where they had at least six children:

    In 1841 they were living in Bale with their children Samuel and Ann. In 1861 they were still in Bale living in one of Mr Arnold’s cottages.

    Elizabeth was buried in Bale on 22nd November 1870.

  • Thomas married Elizabeth Bailey from Stiffkey, in Hindringham on 8th April 1816. They are only known to have had one child:

    In 1851 Thomas was a farm bailiff living in Tattersett with Elizabeth. He was buried in Tattersett on 9th April 1854.

  • Robert married Mary Naughton in Hindringham on 25th June 1811. Mary already had a son Richard, born on 4th February 1811 and baptised on 10th February but he died and was buried on 10th May 1812. Their five children born after the marriage were:

    In 1841 Robert was living in the house of his employer, James Cooke, who was a farmer in Hindringham. Mary, a midwife, was living nearby with her father, John Naughton who was a mole catcher. Also with Mary was her son John, a basket maker, and her recently widowed daughter, Ann Drake, with her 1-year-old son Alexander.

    In 1851 Robert was still living in his emloyer’s house, Bayfield Lodge, and Mary was in Lion Street, Hindringham, with her son John and hs wife Ann. Also there was Ann Drake and her son, now known by his middle name, Leopold.

    By 1861 Robert had become the innkeeper of the Lion Inn in Lion Street and with him was his wife, Mary, and their grandson, Leopold, who was then 21 and a basket maker like his uncle John.

    By 1871 Robert was a farm worker living at The Knoll, Hindringham with Mary who was still working as a midwife. With them was their grandson, Alexander Leopold Drake, with his wife and two children.

    Robert was buried in Hindringham on 18th February 1879 at the age of 87.

    James was a farm labourer and in 1851 they were living in Bale Road, Hindringham. By 1861 they were living at Blue Tile House and James was a farm bailiff employing 10 men and 3 boys. In 1871 their address was given as Duke Road, Hindringham and they had four small grandchildren staying with them.

    James was buried in Hindringham on 22nd June 1879.

  • Sarah married Thomas Francis in Hindringham on 5th February 1827 and they are known to have had six children:

    They lived in Hindringham and in 1841 Thomas was recorded as a rat catcher but in later census records he was shown as a farm worker living in Lower Green, Hindringham.
